On the wind-bitten night before December 18th, the seventh Yule Lad storms forth from the peaks above Iceland. Known as Hurðaskellir – Door Slammer, he is the thunder in the hallway and the echoing wrath of winter wood. When he enters a home, he hunts for doors left carelessly ajar and with a glee fit for a mountain troll he sends them crashing shut, one after another, until the night itself seems to shudder.

A creature of racket and revelry, Hurðaskellir delights in every boom, squeal, and tremor. Through the twilight hours he prowls, shaking sleepers from their dreams, feeding on the chaos he sows. To hear a sudden slam in the deep of winter is to know he has passed—laughing, loud, and utterly unrepentant. Then quitly he leaves a gift inside the shoes of those left below icicles on the windowsills of well behaved children.
