The compact Lewis Chess game is based on the original archaeological find from the 12c found on the Isle of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. Discovered in 1831 in a sandy bay in Uig, to the south west of Lewis, many rumours and superstitions about the pieces and how they came to be still circulate to this day. Some of the original pieces can be seen on view in The British Museum in London and The Scottish National Museum in Edinburgh.
Although not made of walrus ivory or sperm whale teeth like the originals, this Lewis Chess game is made from high-quality resin and can be kept safely inside the chess board, which doubles as a storage box. Lined with foam specifically to keep each piece safe whist in motion.
