Stekkjastaur — called Sheep-Cote Clod or the Sheep-Worrier — is the first of the Yule Lads to descend from the high, wind-scoured mountains. On the night of December 12th, he slips into the sheep cotes, creeping among the ewes in hopes of stealing a taste of their warm milk, leaving the flocks restless and uneasy. Yet for all his mischief, he bears a token of goodwill: before retreating to the mountains, he places a small gift in the shoes set upon the windowsills, a quiet sign that the Yule Lads have begun their annual visits.
